I am at the end of the book, and savoring it, not wanting it to end, yet dying to learn the frat boys' fate!!!! Well, that is how I felt a couple of days ago. Alas, I had to continue reading, and the end does not disappoint. Rather, as with the rest of the book, it is revelatory, insightful and disturbingly uplifting. I've always enjoyed great mystery novels or psychological thrillers where there's compelling characters, adrenalin producing action, gripping plots and sub-plots, juicy locations etc. But I have to admit, even with the great ones, there's usually been an element missing that I couldn't quite put my finger on. That is until I read Colman's "Cloud of Terns." There's something deeply satisfying yet unsettling about the quest for revenge, even if it's a righteous one. And Colman exquisitely navigates this dangerous terrain while subtly exploring its moral, emotional, and psychological dimensions. He's got all the other elements that great works of fiction, mysteries, and thrillers possess. But with his diverse group of characters, he also transcends the cultural homogeneity that makes most of these other works seem colorless by comparison. Not only does he explore the intricacies of revenge, but he also deftly weaves in other psychosocial dynamics, such scapegoating, prejudice, stereotypes, cross-cultural friendships and bonding, abusive sexual relationships, etc. In other words, the stuff of real life that we're all surrounded by and immersed in but rarely have the time or energy to explore or try to understand. Taking this journey with Colman has not only been exhilarating but self-revelatory. I'm grateful to him for helping me open my eyes to things I only now realize I had deceived myself about. An incredible read. He has my highest possible recommendation!!!
What a delightful, rare combination page turning suspense combined with feel-good insight! I postponed work to finish "Cloud of Terns" in 2 days, propelled by the suspense. But this was not a mindless distraction! Jungian Analyst Arthur Colemen enriches the question of revenge with a lifetime of insight earned by hearing peoples' stories in the consulting room. He gets it exactly right--the dialogue, the concerns and feelings, the reactions. He tackles big questions with bite-sized delectable metaphors, leaving the reader satisfied like after a fine meal with friends. This is not mindless escape reading, fantasy compensation for impotence, Pollyanna platitude or philosophical polemic. It's real life seen fully with insight and compassion. Arthur shows us what it might feel like to sit with him as our counselor through the `turns" in our life, to be witnessed by a wise elder who can hold his gaze on our dilemma without blinking, yet hint at new directions for resolution for us to walk on our own two feet. This book is a gift, a map for everyone struggling to find forgiveness in their lives, presented in the ancient tradition of fireside-storytelling that passes on wisdom without ever giving advice.
